Missionary Geek

WordPress imageDo you have a ministry website yet? Starting one is not hard. There are some hosting companies or ministries that will build a website for you, but you have to work with them to either learn how to update the site, or send them the information you want updated. Don’t make the mistake that many missionaries do. They will meet a dear brother in a church who offers to create a website for them. In the end they end up with a website, but no knowledge or ability to maintain it. The site then languishes with no hope of being updated.

Using WordPress you can create a professional website without having to know how to code. Using books like Head First WordPress to help you get started will show you how easy it is to get a site up and running. Even if you don’t buy a hosting package you can use WordPress.com and start a free website with an address like myministry.wordpress.com. You can pay WordPress to host the domain name myministry.com on top of their platform. There is nothing to install. You just start using it. While using a free platform like WordPress.com may not be the best choice, it is at least a way to get started and keep your friends and supporters informed.

Starting a ministry website is simple with WordPress. There are other free platforms available, like Blogger.com, but WordPress is simple yet very flexible. Because it is a website platform, you can install the software on any web host. You do not need to use one service (like Blogger) and then be stuck with no options if you decided to move to another host.

Even if you don’t build the site yourself, the way to update a WordPress site with new content is as simple as writing a letter in a word processor. If someone offers to build a site for you, ask them to use a simple content management system like WordPress to create the site. You can easily update it and learn how to use it over time.
